Recently, I have read an article on collages entitled "Cut-and-Paste Culture: The New Collage." It highlighted how collage work has changed over the years and what different artists are doing to relate their work to the ever-changing world. For example, one way that contemporary collage differs from that in the 20th century is that is more of a multisensory experience. Some collages today have videos that go along with the works that offer an auditory experience, while others have tactility as a feature. Many collages of today focus on and encapsulate the internet and its influence on people and society as a whole, compared to 20th century collages that were more interested in the news.
I think that the reason why collage appeals to so many artists today is because it is an easy way to express complex ideas. By combining images, videos, and the like, the artist is able to convey things that they may not be able to do as effectively with other forms of art. Collage is also an art form that is easy for amateurs to pick up quickly. That way, even though they may be less skilled, they can still have an impact on the viewers.
