When I was in high school, my art teachers had my classmates and I experiment with many different ways of making art. We mostly did 2D art, but it was interesting to see other ways to do things.
For example, in my junior year, the teacher wanted us to do scratch art. I had only heard brief mentions of it beforehand, so I was confused when she started handing out these thick, black squares to everyone. When we scratched the boards with the knife-like tools, it was either white or silver underneath. We were then told to pick a picture to recreate on the boards as a project. Essentially, for the project, we had to scratch in the highlights of the pictures instead of the shadows like you normally would with pencil and paper. I chose to do a picture of a lion and it was surprisingly fun. I had to take into account all of the details concerning the fur and how it laid on the lion's face. If you have not tried scratch art, I highly recommend doing it because it is oddly therapeutic.

In my senior year of high school (before the pandemic), I took a painting class that was also very relaxing. We had one project where we tried to recreate one of Wayne Thiebaud's paintings. I chose to do his painting called "Three Treats." It took me awhile to complete the project because he uses so many different colors to portray shadows and highlights, but I managed to make it something that makes me proud.
